When in Rome (or DC)

While I was in DC for Carrie & Bryan's wedding, I got to see an old friend, Diane for her engagement pics....I'll be back next May to shoot their wedding, then popping over to Rome (which is what you do - you just "pop" over to Rome) for a few days to photograph their papal blessing & have a quick shoot on the streets of Rome. Sigh, life is rough.

One of Diane's favorite spots is the Supreme Court building, so we stopped there on our whirlwind tour of DC, to get a shot of them in front of these beautiful doors.

Then to not leave out the opportunity to be completely cheesy, an "I Love DC" shirt was donned by Mike (by the way, Diane's initials will be DC when they are married) for the last few pics.

I'm finally catching up on editing - the numbers are going down without massive numbers of photos coming into the workflow. Which is good, right? Down time is needed....

I left off with Sommar & John's wedding....

From there it was off to Washington DC for Carrie & Bryan's hot hot hot wedding. And I mean hot - 114 degrees with the heat index that day. I gotta say, they all did well despite the puddles that formed under anyone standing outside for more than ten seconds.

Despite the heat and a limo driver who didn't know where he was going (which left the out-of-town photographer in charge of directions) we found an AMAZING location for photos. Glen Echo Park on the MacArthur causeway was a random and PERFECT find for this group.

With a great backdrop it was hard not to find a way to get some amazing shots of this lovely couple and their friends.

Yes, I must. I think one of my favorite things of the day was Carrie's infectious laugh.

All in all, the heat, the travel & worrying about getting a wedding party lost was worth it all to spend the day with you. Thank you, Carrie & Bryan, for a lovely wedding!

Summer lovin' part 2

So I left off with the adventures of Cheredith....

Next up was Sommar and John on a hot hot HOT summer day, on July 10. I was "introduced" to Sommar and John through a wedding I shot early - I had managed to capture them dancing, and they loved the photo, and loved my work, and well, frankly, I love them. These two are so laid back, and the wedding & whole wedding party was a blast to work with.

We started out early in the morning in Muskegon at a salon straight out of my dreams. Antiques everywhere, the sweet smell of Aveda products, and a location right down the street from the Hackley House.

From there we had the pleasure of sneaking into my friends' cottage on Lake Michigan for some private group photos, free from the gawking of passersby. Thanks Mom C AGAIN for letting me go out there.

Despite the blistering hot sand, a split pair of groosmen's pants, and pretty much an entire bridal party which was melting, we were having a blast tromping around before the wedding even started.

We even snuck into the back bedroom for a seriously steamy shot. I'm surprised I got them out of there ;)

What a long wonderful summer it has been

One free from blogging, apparently....

There's no way I can think about getting caught up, so I'm just going to highlight a few wonderful weddings here. They were all wonderful in their own unique way, of course.

So let's get started. But I'll probably jump around and have to make this a few installments!

Shortly after Kenny & Becky's wedding (the day after, actually) was Kristin & Joe's spectacular wedding in Detroit. I've known Kristin since she was 18 months old, and was her babysitter/big sister for a long time. I've seen her through kindergarten, graduations, and fortunately, not a lot of heartbreak. Kristin met Joe in college, and we all knew right away he was a great guy...and a great guy for her.

Shooting her wedding was an honor, and it was hard for this "momma" to keep a dry eye. Set at the historic Belle Isle Conservatory, the wedding was not complete without the release of live butterflies and a lot of laughter.

Our bridal party photos took us all around downtown Detroit, to some of Kristin & Joe's favorite spots. You can't beat a great skyline & a fun wedding party.

Their fabulous reception was held at Greektown Casino, where we all danced the night away, then met for brunch in the morning...a lot of sleepy faces at that one, mine included!

Next on the agenda were Liz & Sean, whom I met when I photographed her sister's wedding last fall. Though the wedding sites were the same, these sisters have their own unique style & interests. After their wedding mass, we piled up the wedding party to head into downtown Grand Rapids, where a major traffic jam held us up and allowed for a quick detour to the studio, where Liz rocked out some seriously amazing portraits.

After hitting the studio, we headed downtown to the Grand Rapids Art Museum, and wandered around town for some fun shooting.

These two are so passionately in love, it was difficult to get a bad shot. My favorite of the day had to be their first dance. You don't have to look hard to find the love.

With just two weeks to gear up for the next wedding, my tear ducts had just enough of a break to prepare for my good friend Meredith's golf course wedding. Set at the beautiful Blythefield Hills Country Club, this day full of friends, laughter, and lots of gorgeous weather made for a day perfect for celebrating the marriage of Meredith to Chad. I now call them Cheredith.

Now I know you're thinking "of course she loves this wedding - look at all that pink"! True, I loved the pink, but what I loved was seeing one of my dear friends so happy to be marrying her best friend.

And with a golfcourse as my canvas, I strapped a chair to the back of the golf cart, threw it in the rough, and had fun with my Meredith's photos.

What girl doesn't love a chair in a field?

Just about two years ago I had the pleasure of photographing Jillian & Travis' wedding in Muskegon, MI and now I get to see them waiting for their new daughter, Zoe to arrive.

Jillian is a wonderful mother already, and I know Zoe will have a wonderful life with this family. If she'll ever show up (8 days late now).

Jillian and Travis are still (ok, only after two years) so adorable together, and are obviously still very much in love!

Now Zoe sweetie, your Momma is ready to meet you....time to come out and play!

Kenny & Becky's Love, En Fuego

The theme of this beautiful wedding was "fire" - their fiery love for each other was apparent, and not just in the matchbooks and glass flame sculptures on each table at the reception.

I first met Kenny and Becky 9 months ago at Kenny's sister's wedding and instantly liked them....and was overjoyed to hear they wanted me to share their special day too. (I love seeing families again!).

Despite the threat of rain, we had an amazing day together, and just like their fire theme represents, I expect a slow, long burn of life long love out of these two!

As this whole photography gig has grown/expanded/developed/evolved/more verbs, I've struggled with how to make the leap to full time, but more importantly, how to follow God, with a strong dose of patience, and wait on his timing.....and how to leave a job I actually enjoy working for a great cause (www.us.wwcs.org) - well my boss made it easy, by being flexible offering me the chance of a lifetime!

I've gone down to just three days a week, Tues-Thurs for now, and am focusing on just our web & creative pieces, which I love....but which also leaves me open to do so much more with photography - not to mention to achieve a new level of balance in my life - hopefully!

So what that means is a lot of things.....but most importantly, it means I have more time to devote to photography.

As part of that move forward, I just signed a lease on some gorgeous studio space on the north side of town (820 Monroe) under the awesome & amazing Amy Carroll and Jenn Lynne! So now I can take sessions - rain or shine! Check out a few shots that I snapped inside the studio today.

Meghan and Peter are world travelers and they're about as green as they come..their wedding was fabulous evidence of that.

Their rings were Hawaiian Koa wood bands and the brides dress was made of bamboo fiber (which she found on www.etsy.com).

The ceremony and reception were held at Post Family Farms in a beautiful rustic barn structure, which provided plenty of interesting spots for photos around outside.

Meghan and her father literally danced down the isle towards Peter, who stood beneath a beautiful chuppah that was hand painted by his own mother.

The reception decorations held true to their earthy theme, with beautiful moss filled buckets, bowls of clementines donned with rosemary sprigs, and orchid centerpieces.

Natural beauty and a calm, easy-going atmosphere were effortlessly accomplished by this couple, leaving everyone with a feeling of pure happiness as they left.

Melissa and John were married on Halloween at long last, after meeting in college and dating for ten - yes, ten -- years. The wedding was held at Castle Farms in Charlevoix, MI.

John made sure there wasn't a dry eye in the joint with his genuine and heartfelt vows.

The weather was cold, but that didn't stop this bride from getting some great camera action.. when I asked her if she would be willing to get into a pond in her wedding dress, she replied "Duh, that's why I hired you."

Don't let this shot frighten you, this chick was no Bridezilla.

With a Halloween themed reception complete with glittery orange pumpkins, caramel apple favors, and black feather decorations, I think it's obvious that this classy couple knows how to have fun.

Christine and Scott were married at St. Margaret Mary in Allendale, MI.. where they had a traditional Latin wedding mass.

Afterwards, we took a trip down Lake Michigan Dr. and a sweet old couple let us use the barn in their yard for photos..

Next, we stopped at Tunnel Park for some gorgeous beach shots.

The reception was held at Alpenrose in Holland. Very fun family! (with some fantastic dance moves, I might add..)

This wedding was so sweet, I got a cavity. The ceremony overlooked the hills of northeast Grand Rapids..

Stacy and Brad met in high school on a mission trip and have been best friends ever since.

The best part about this wedding was how obvious it was that their love for Christ brought them so close together; this love rang loudly through out the entire day and night.

These guys brought a whole new meaning to 'High School Sweet Hearts'...

Their "favor" was a HUGE table of candy, each kind had a special meaning to them.

Adorable? I'd say so.

This adorable couple had both their wedding ceremony and reception at Thornapple Pointe Golf Club on a gorgeous day, smack dab in the middle of August.

Before the wedding, the girls had a blast cruising around on golf carts checking out the grounds for the best spots for photos.

Katie and Steve were wed in a catholic church on the west side of Grand Rapids, on a rainy day in August.

Regardless of the less-than-ideal weather conditions, the group toughed it out and got us some great shots.

We were even invited to the roof of the Anchor Bar, which held a stunning view of the city as our backdrop.

Hair and makeup were done by Ryan at Salon Maui, who touched up the bride right before the wedding and even switched her to an updo for the reception at the B.O.B.

Perfect example of how beautiful and fun a wedding can be, whether it's sunny or not!

Not too long ago my boss talked to me about potentially going to India this summer for work - and of course, I was intrigued.....and said "why yes, of course I'd like to go." He set a pretty aggressive fundraising goal for us, which we hit....

And this isn't a fundraising letter (FYI), though if you CHOOSE to do something, I am of course appreciative.

Through our 2009 campaign we are attempting to raise one million dollars for three school projects in India - for a number of purposes (sponsorship, building projects, sustainable income generation projects). I'll be going to do primarily photography - of children, schools, the projects. Talk about a dream come true!

Just this morning we received notification from one of our major donors that they have set up a matching gift of $25,000 for The Slumschool Project - the only caveat is that they have to be new donors, donors who haven't given in a couple of years, or donors who give a larger gift than one they gave in the past two years....so it's a big challenge, but one we will work hard to meet.

If you are at all interested in giving in any amount - $10, $25, and on up (we love up), please...give. These children have nothing....and we hope to give them hope.

Giving "props"

I was so excited on Friday to receive an email from my print studio, Color Incorporated telling me one of the photos I had printed was selected as a staff favorite that week....until I realized it wasn't a photo I had taken!

My cousin, Stacy (Shooks) Kraus graciously lets me stay at her home when I'm in SE Michigan - as do her parents - I'm so fortunate to have such loving family members!

In exchange for "hotel services," I take pics of Stacy's family. This time it was extended family, all of her husband's fam...let's just say 8 adults are easy, but add 6 kids to that, and whew, this photographer crashed at 7:40 pm!

Those are the words I've heard from Cole, the eldest of the Morton Clan. And frankly, they should be....famous for so many things: a home filled with love, laughter, and hospitality. Chad and Jodi have been friends for a few years now, but the more I get to know them, the more I appreciate them and admire their lives. I'm honored to be their friend, and to have been able to challenge myself to try and capture some of the fun they have as a family.

Each one unique, almost as unique as my dear friends Anya and Billy. I was happy/honored/excited to be a part of their day - even though it was completely waterlogged....or rather, a complete monsoon!!! The outdoor pictures/wedding/reception quickly became indoor pictures and an under-the-tent relatively dry ceremony.

In the spirit of creativity and flexibility, all of the group shots were done at the following GR local locations:

June 28th marks the 3rd Annual Bostwick Lake Triathlon, and my second round of photographing the event. Ok, in Iona's defense, she's not an anti-bride, she's just (along with Chris), extremely willing to let me take them down Grandville Avenue and explore pushing the idea of traditional engagement photography to just over the edge of traditional into well....fun!

I won't be able to do their wedding, it is in Italy, but I have the privilege of photographing their reception when they come home, and got to spend this time with them.

Gibson Isaiah Sokolove and potential future classmate (live in the same town) Skylah Rae Woodwyk were introduced to my lens this weekend. It's how most kids these days get to know me.

I've been blessed to have both the Sokolove family and Skylah's mommy (I've met daddy, but don't know him that well!) in my life, and I'm lucky they are letting me in to this new phase of each of their lives.

This past weekend I went to visit a friend in Ann Arbor, and two dear friends (Ikea and Trader Joe) in Livonia/Canton....and stayed with my cousin, Stacy, and her husband Gary, and two children, Dylan and Madison.

Fair Trade Fair

Yesterday was Fair Trade Awareness Day, and I joined the F.A.I.R. group on their "shop hop" where they visited local merchants featuring fair trade products. I had to leave early because my bank account couldn't handle any more shops! It's great to purchase something knowing that it was fairly made, the merchants are being supported, and because these shops are locally owned, the profits help support our community.

Adventures in Dicoccoville

A family I love dearly, the Dicoccos, have given up a cushy West Michigan life to go live in Africa for (at least) two years. I love them, support them, and love to share their story with others.

Tracey has been a photographic inspiration, a great encourager, and the biggest giver I know (she left her studio lights with me!!!).

2008 bridal parties...you have a big hurdle to overcome in being labeled the "best wedding party of all time."
